In an interview with Jimmy Hyams, Tennessee athletic director Mike Hamilton was quite non-commital to the same embattled head basketball coach that he stood behind just a few months ago.
Hamilton told the longtime Knoxville media personality, "We don’t know the answer today," when asked if Pearl will return. "We’ve done a lot of soul searching about the direction of our program and we’ll continue to do that and we’ll decide after we’re out of the NCAA Tournament what direction it is that we’re going to go next."
"We’re not going to finish our evaluation until after the season is over."
Hamilton also stated that Tennessee was not informed of the bump rule violation that took place four days after Pearl's tearful press conference when he "came clean" about his lying, and having a recruit and his family lie, to the NCAA.
As we wrote in this very space the same day the NCAA's Letter of Allegation was made public, that bump rule violation should have been the straw that broke the camel's back.
The fact that Pearl didn't even notify the university of the violation, a fact we didn't know at the time, just adds to the case against the Vols formerly beloved head basketball coach.
If Hamilton's ominous words two days before the Vols open NCAA tournament play in Charlotte, NC are any indication, the assertion that Pearl's extra violation should cost him his job could likely prove true in the coming days.
