It wasn't the smoothest of exits for Bruce Pearl.  And now, the former University of Tennessee men's basketball coach doesn't exactly appear to have the brightest of futures either.

Pearl will interview Thursday for the head coaching position of the NBDL's Texas Legends, according to ESPN.com's Marc Stein and Andy Katz.  Another possible move would be for Pearl to take some time off from coaching altogether while working as a college basketball TV analyst--likely for CBS.

If neither option sounds great, it's because there isn't a great option for Bruce at this point.  Pearl's goal appears to be working on an NBA sideline in the future.  But he's a little old for working his way through the minors to get there.

Remember though, Pearl did his most damage at Tennessee when his team took on the role of an underdog.  Perhaps the once-orange-suspendered coach can do the same for the sake of his future.  As with most choices in life, there are pros and cons (and risks) to both sides of this equation.

Either Pearl will coach amid minimal-scrutiny but risk getting lost in the shuffle, or he will stay in the public eye on TV while risking the end of his coaching career.  Sure, there's a chance he could prove the doubters wrong.  There's also a real chance Pearl is headed directly towards mediocrity.

I have no good advice for Pearl at this point.  But for the sake of his career (and, quite frankly, his name), I hope someone in his inner-circle is able to offer him some sound direction.
