Cuonzo Martin has officially signed his first prospect as the head coach at Tennessee. Wes Washpun of Cedar Rapids, Iowa signed on the dotted line Wednesday at the beginning of the spring signing period.
Martin recruited Washpun while he was coach at Missouri State and the 6'1", 170-pound point guard told the Knoxville News Sentinel that was a major reason he decided to come to Tennessee.
“The big part of my decision was definitely Coach Martin and how he has been recruiting me throughout this whole process,” Washpun said. “He’s a man I trust.”
Washpun joins Chris Jones as the Vols only signees, so far, in the 2011 class. Jones committed to and signed for coach Bruce Pearl and was reportedly demanding a release from his letter of intent before coach Martin met with him just two weeks ago.
The 5'10", 165-pound Jones, ranked the No. 65 overall prospect in the nation according to ESPN, played at Melrose High in Memphis until his senior year when he attended two different prep schools.
The addition of Washpun to this class adds depth to a spot where inconsistent play continually plagued the Vols for much of Pearl's tenure.
Maybe this signing gets the Cuonzo Martin era off the right foot at point guard.
